    WITH JIU JITSU ENCOMPASSING GROUND FIGHTING AS A WHOLE, IT IS HARD TO PINPOINT JIU JITSU’S EXACT ORIGIN. MANY THEORIES DATE ALL THE WAY BACK TO ANCIENT INDIA WITH THE BUDDHIST MONKS AND THEIR PHILOSOPHY. THE GOAL IN THIS ART IS TO NEUTRALIZE AN AGGRESSOR WHILE DOING AS LITTLE HARM TO THEM AS POSSIBLE, WHILE STILL USING THE SELF DEFENSE TECHNIQUES IN THEIR PURSUIT OF SELF-MASTERY

  • 1700 – JAPAN AGE / THE EVOLUTION

    JIU JITSU DID NOT REALLY EVOLVE UNTIL CENTURIES LATER WHEN IT EXPANDED THROUGHOUT ASIA. THE SAMURAI USED IT ON THE BATTLEFIELDS AS A FIGHTING METHOD TO DEFEAT BOTH ARMED AND UNARMED OPPONENTS. THE ACTUAL TERM “JIU JITSU” — WHICH TRANSLATES AS “THE GENTLE ART” — WAS FIRST RECORDED BEING USED BY THE FIRST MAN TO EVER OPEN UP A JIU JITSU SCHOOL IN JAPAN; HISAMORI TENENUCHI.

  • 1882 – JIGORO KANO / THE SPLIT

    WHEN THE FEUDAL SYSTEM IN JAPAN FELL, JIU JITSU HAD TO GO THROUGH MANY MODIFICATIONS IN ORDER FOR IT TO BE PRACTICED. THIS IS WHEN A MAN NAMED JIGORO KANO (1860-1938) CREATED A STYLE OF JIU JITSU THAT PLACED MORE EMPHASIS ON THROWS AND COULD SAFELY BE PRACTICED AT A HIGH INTENSITY WITHOUT CONSTANTLY CAUSING THE PRACTITIONERS INJURIES, WHILE PROMOTING HUMAN DEVELOPMENT. THIS STYLE WAS CALLED “KANO JIU JITSU” AND LATER “JUDO.”

  • 1914 – CONDE KOMA / THE DISCIPLE

    IT WASN’T UNTIL 1914, WHEN ONE OF KANO’S MOST REMARKABLE STUDENTS MITSUYU MAEDA (MORE COMMONLY KNOWN AS COUNT KOMA) LANDED IN BRAZIL. MAEDA HAD TRAVELED AROUND THE WORLD AS A COMPETITIVE FIGHTER AND HAD A TREMENDOUS AMOUNT OF TALENT AS WELL AS TRAINING IN TRADITIONAL JAPANESE JIU JITSU TO COMPLEMENT HIS JUDO. A LOCAL BUSINESSMAN BY THE NAME OF GASTAO GRACIE HELPED MAEDA GET ESTABLISHED IN HIS NEW HOME. AS A THANK YOU, MAEDA OFFERED TO TEACH GASTAO HOW TO DEFEND HIMSELF. GASTAO, HOWEVER, FELT THAT HE WAS TOO OLD AND ASKED MAEDA IF HE COULD TRAIN HIS OLDEST SON CARLOS GRACIE.

  • 1916 – CARLOS GRACIE

    MAEDA USED JIU JITSU AS A TOOL TO TEACH THE YOUNG CARLOS VALUES LIKE SELF CONTROL, DISCIPLINE AND RESPECT. IN 1925 CARLOS SETTLED IN RIO DE JANEIRO, WHERE HE OPENED ACADEMIA GRACIE DE JIU JITSU. CARLOS BEGAN TO TEACH THE ART TO HIS YOUNGER BROTHERS OSWALDO, GASTAO, GEORGE, AND HELIO AS WELL AS DEVELOPING A PHILOSOPHY AND NUTRITION SYSTEM  TO COMPLEMENT THE ART. THE GRACIE FAMILY BEGAN TO GROW (CARLOS HAD 21 CHILDREN) AND THE BROTHERS BEGAN TO CHALLENGE OTHER FIGHTERS TO NO-HOLDS-BARRED FIGHTS TO PROVE THE EFFECTIVENESS OF JIU JITSU.

  • 1972 – CARLEY GRACIE

    CARLOS GRACIE PERSONALLY TRAINED, NOW 9TH DEGREE RED BELT, CARLEY GRACIE. HIS ACOMPLISHEMENTS AS A JIU-JITSU ATHLETE ARE BOTHING SHORT OF AMAZING, BEING BRAZILIAN NATIONAL CHAMPION IN BOTH SPORTS AND STREET JIU-JITSU FOR FOUR YEARS STRAIGHT WITH AN OVERALL PERFECT RECORD. CARLEY HAS NEVER LOST A JIU-JITSU MATCH HIS ENTIRE LIFE.

    IN 1972, GRAND MASTER CARLEY MOVED TO THE UNITED STATES TO TEACH JIU-JITSU AND START A FAMILY.  HE WAS THE FIRST MEMBER OF THE GRACIE FAMILY TO TEACH GRACIE JIU-JITSU IN THE UNITED STATES. HE NOW RESIDES AND TEACHES JIU-JITSU IN SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA, WHERE HE HAD 3 CHILDREN NAMED TANYA, RALSTON, AND CLARK GRACIE.

  • NOW – CLARK GRACIE

    CLARK GRACIE IS A 2ND DEGREE BLACK UNDER HIS FATHER, CARLEY GRACIE. HE STARTED JIU-JITSU AT THE AGE OF 10 IN HIS FATHER’S ACADEMY IN SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA WHERE HE GREW UP. OVER THE YEARS, CLARK WON ALL THE JIU-JITSU TOURNAMENTS THERE IS TO WIN, INCLUDING THE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP, THE PAN AMERICAN CHAMPIONSHIP, THE U.S. NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP AND MANY MORE. HIS 2013 PAN AMERICAN WIN WITH HIS SIGNATURE OMOPLATA SUBMISSION FINISH, OR “CLARKOPLATA”, EARNED HIM THE SUBIMISSION OF THE YEAR AWARD FROM THE WORLD JIU-JITSU EXPO AND THE NICKNAME “THE OMOPLATA KING”.

    CLARK GRACIE REMAINS ONE THE WORLD’S TOP RANKING JIU-JITSU ATHLETE WHILE RUNNING HIS OWN WORLDWIDE JIU-JITSU ASSOCIATION WITH LOCATION ALL OVER THE GLOBE.
